1.5" Permian Amphibian (Branchiosaur) Fossil - Germany

This is a 1.5" fossil of a branchiosaurid (Apateon pedestris?), a primitive amphibian that existed during the Permian period, some 280 million years ago. These fossils are preserved as a carbon film on the shale, usually with just the skull and vertebrae preserved. This one has a skull, vertebral column, and some soft-bodied preservation. It has been coated with a sealant to preserve as they are fossilized as a thin carbon-film.

Comes with an acrylic display stand.

Branchiosaurids were likely semi-aquatic and represent one of first animals to move onto the land. It was collected from the Pfalz region of Germany. The region has been closed permanently to collecting for several decades, so the amount of material left on the market is dwindling.
