1.6" Pennsylvanian Fern (Neuropteris) - Kentucky

This is a 1.6" fossil seed fern (Neuropteris), from the Breathitt Formation, Leslie County, Kentucky. This is one pinnule (branch of leaflets) from the main stem of a fern. It comes from the Late Carboniferous, Pennsylvanian aged forests that formed the coal shales of Kentucky and Ohio. An unidentified plant stalk is also visible.

Neuropteris is genus of seed fern, extinct species of fern that reproduced from seed as opposed to sporophyte reproduction of most modern ferns.
