1.9" Fossil Triassic Ammonite (Ceratites) - Germany

This is a 1.9" ammonite (Ceratites) from Germany. This specimen has ben petrified, that is to say all of the original material has been replaced. In this case it is probably silica replacement. the smooth appearing areas represent the outer shell and the patterned areas are the sutures of the inner shell.

Ammonites were predatory cephalopod mollusks that resembled squids with spiral shells. They are more closely related to living octopuses, though their shells resemble that of nautilus species. True ammonites appeared in the fossil record about 240 million years ago during the Triassic Period. The last lineages disappeared 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous.
