2.4" Isotelus Trilobite - Mt. Orab, Ohio
This is a 2.4" long Isotelus maximus from the famous Mt. Orab, Ohio trilobite locality. Isotelus maximus is the state fossil of Ohio.
There have not been many good Isotelus found in the quarry in recent years. This specimen is mostly prone with the tail just slightly tucked. Both genal spines are present with the tip of the right one partially free of the shale. There is about 3% shell restoration in a few patches where it fractured during collection.

Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.
