2.5" Polished Ammonite (Cleoniceras) Fossil - Unique Black Color!
This is a 2.5" wide polished ammonite (Cleoniceras sp.) fossil from Ambatolafia, Madagascar. These ammonites are Late Cretaceous in age, or about 110 million years old. The exterior has been polished to reveal its deep gray and black tones and sutures, unusual for ammonite fossils in the area.

Ammonites were predatory cephalopod mollusks that resembled squids with spiral shells. They are more closely related to living octopuses, though their shells resemble that of nautilus species. True ammonites appeared in the fossil record about 240 million years ago during the Triassic Period. The last lineages disappeared 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous.
