2.7" Cretaceous Ammonite (Crioceratites) Fossil - France

This is a 2.7" fossil ammonite of the species Crioceratites duvali, collected from Drôme, France. It is Hauterivian (Cretaceous period) in age, or approximately 130 - 133 million years old. The rock has been worked away to expose this ammonite. During collection, a portion of the ammonite broke away on the opposite side of the rock, requiring crack repair and gap fill restoration. There is additional restoration towards the center of the spiral. It comes with an acrylic display stand.

Ammonites were predatory cephalopod mollusks that resembled squids with spiral shells. They are more closely related to living octopuses, though their shells resemble that of nautilus species. True ammonites appeared in the fossil record about 240 million years ago during the Triassic Period. The last lineages disappeared 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous.
