3.35" Polished Mammoth Molar Section - South Carolina

This is a gorgeous, 3.35" long, polished section, of a Columbia Mammoth (Mammuthus columbi) molar collected from the coastal region of South Carolina. It has been sliced on and highly polished on one side to a mirror like finish. Really an interesting piece. It comes with an acrylic display stand.

It was collected from a river in South Carolina. While finding complete mammoth molars in these rivers is rare, finding partial or fragmented molars is not uncommon. These partial mammoth molars are collected by divers who are primarily looking for Megalodon teeth on the river bottom. Slicing them so you can see a cross-section makes for a unique view of the fossil.

The Columbian mammoth was one of the last members of the North American megafauna to go extinct: its date of extinction generally is set at approximately 12,500 years ago. The Columbian mammoth was a savanna and grassland inhabitant, similar to the modern African elephant. Large males grew to about 13 feet tall at the shoulder and weighed up to 7 tons, with tusks that could grow as long as the mammoths were tall.
