4.4" Cut & Polished, Agatized Kritosaurus Vertebra - Aguja Formation

This is a very interesting Hadrosaur (Kritosaurus navajovius) vertebra from the Aguja Formation of Texas. The bone was been "agatized" resulting in well preserved cell structure inside the bone. The 4.4" tall vertebra has been cut in half and polished to show these interesting, inner structures. Both halves of the vertebra are included.

Agatized or agate replaced dinosaur bone is a rare form of fossilized dinosaur bone where the original fossilized bone (typically permineralized with calcite) has been re-mineralized (replaced/substituted) with silica-type compounds (agate, jasper, chalcedony, or opal). It's a fairly unusual occurrence and nearly all of the agatized dinosaur bone on the market comes from the Morrison Formation of Utah/Colorado.

This specimen was collected within the past year on private deeded property in Brewster County, Texas. You won't see any other dinosaur material from the Aguja and Javelina Formations for sale because nearly all of the formations lie within the boundaries of Big Bend National Park, where fossils may not be collected, or in Mexico, where fossils cannot be commercially traded. One of our partners was lucky enough to purchase several hundred acres of ranch land in Texas containing a good exposure of these formations, and we will be offering more material from the locality in the future.
