5.1" Ammonite (Eupachydiscus) Fossil - British Columbia

This is a 5.1" fossil ammonite (Eupachydiscus perplicatus) from the Haslam Formation near Courtenay, British Columbia. The back half of the ammonite has been weathered away. This comes out of an old collection of ammonite fossils we recently acquired including many from unusual locations that you can no longer get material from.

The specimen includes an acrylic display stand.

Ammonites were predatory cephalopod mollusks that resembled squids with spiral shells. They are more closely related to living octopuses, though their shells resemble that of nautilus species. True ammonites appeared in the fossil record about 240 million years ago during the Triassic Period. The last lineages disappeared 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous.
