6.1" Pennsylvanian Fern (Alethopteris) Plate - Kentucky

This is a fossil seed fern (Alethopteris) plate, collected from the Breathitt Formation, Leslie County, Kentucky. It comes from the Late Carboniferous, Pennsylvanian aged forests that formed the coal shales of Kentucky and Ohio. Small Sphenopteris fossils can be seen near one edge of this plate.

Alethopteris is an extinct genus of seed fern that reproduced from seed, as opposed to sporophyte reproduction of most modern ferns.

It comes with an acrylic display stand.
