7.1" Free-Standing Fossil Ammonite (Hammatoceras) Pair - France

This is a beautiful display piece featuring a pair of Hammatoceras ammonites from Belmont, France. It measures 7.1" tall and the base of stone has been cut flat so that is displays nicely on a hard surface without the need for a display stand. These ammonite fossils are Lower Jurassic (Toarcian Stage) in age, or around 180 million years old.

The upper ammonite has some significant restoration work done to it.

Ammonites were predatory cephalopod mollusks that resembled squids with spiral shells. They are more closely related to living octopuses, though their shells resemble that of nautilus species. True ammonites appeared in the fossil record about 240 million years ago during the Triassic Period. The last lineages disappeared 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous.
