8.2" Pennsylvanian Fern (Neuropteris) Plate - Kentucky

This is a 8.2" fossil seed fern (Neuropteris) plate, from the Breathitt Formation, Leslie County, Kentucky. This specimen contains scattered sections of leaflets, pinnules (branch of leaflets) and stalks. It comes from the Late Carboniferous, Pennsylvanian aged forests that formed the coal shales of Kentucky and Ohio.

Neuropteris is genus of seed fern, extinct species of fern that reproduced from seed as opposed to sporophyte reproduction of most modern ferns.
