9.9" Hadrosaur (Edmontosaurus) Metatarsal (II) - Wyoming

This is a 9.9" long metatarsal II bone from the left foot of an adult hadrosaur (Edmontosaurus annectens), collected from our partner's lease on the Lance (Creek) Formation in Niobrara County, Wyoming.

There are multiple repaired cracks through this bone, with significant gap fill restoration along the surface that would articulate with the middle metatarsal. Gap fill restoration can also be found along the distal and proximal points of articulation within repaired cracks.

Hadrosaurs are frequently referred to as duck-billed dinosaurs and are members of the Ornithischian family Hadrosauridae. They were fairly common herbivores that roamed Asia, Europe, and North America during the Upper Cretaceous Period. Many species of Hadrosaurs had distinctive crests on their heads, some of which had air-filled chambers that may have produced a distinct sound. These crests may have been used for both audio and visual display purposes.
