Polished Petoskey Stone (Fossil Coral) Refrigerator Magnets

These are refrigerator magnets from pieces of polished, Petoskey Stone from Michigan. Petoskey stone is the name for ancient, fossil coral (Hexagonaria percarinata) that is found around the Great Lakes in Michigan. This fossil coral been been cut into a thin slab, polished to a glossy finish on one side and have been backed with a round magnet. The polish really allows for the detailed structures of the coral head to be seen on these specimens.

The photos are representative of the specimens you will receive but don't picture the exact ones. They vary in exact shape and patterning, though they all range from 1.5 to 2" wide.

Known locally as "petoskey stones", this fossil coral can be found along the beaches of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, as well as in rock quarries from Alpena to Traverse City, Michigan. The species is Hexagonaria percarinata, a type of rugose coral that lived during the Middle Devonian period about 350 million years ago. Petoskey stones are the state stone of Michigan.
