Stunning, 15" Fossil Stingray (Heliobatis) - Wyoming

This is an stunning specimen of a rare Heliobatis radians stingray from the Green River Formation in Wyoming. These rays are one of the more rare fossils from the Green River Formation and are highly coveted by collectors for their beauty. At 15" long this one is pretty good sized for the species and is exceptionally well preserved. It was found this summer at the Fossil Lake Safari Quarry near Kemmerer, Wyoming and is nicely centered on a 19.5x14.5" slab of matrix.

There is a repaired crack with thin gap fill running through the head of the ray, but overall restoration on the fossil itself is pretty minimal. Like many large fish fossils from the Green River Formation it's be "inlaid" into the rock for aesthetic and stability purposes. It has then been backed with hardie board for stability and to make it easy to mount on a wall. We can install a french cleat hanging system upon request at no charge.

Heliobatis is an extinct genus of freshwater ray primarily known from the Green River Formation in wyoming. The teeth are triangular and shaped for feeding on small fish, crustaceans, and mollusks.
