1.15" Vibrant Blue Halite Crystal - Eastern Turkey

This is a well formed, 1.15" wide crystal of high grade blue halite. Blue halite is known to come from Turkey, Iran, New Mexico, and multiple other locations. This specimen is from Tuzluca in the Iğdır Province of Turkey. It displays excellent color saturation and zoning within.

About Blue Halite

Halite, more commonly known as rock salt, is a form of the mineral sodium chloride (NaCl). It forms when salt-rich waters evaporate and can be colored by mineral impurities. Blue halite is relatively rare and highly sought after by mineral collectors due to its vivid coloration and water-soluble fragility.

The blue color in halite (rock salt) is primarily due to the presence of tiny, colloidal-sized clusters of sodium metal, known as "colloidal sodium", within the crystal lattice. This phenomenon is often triggered by natural radiation, such as that from surrounding sylvite (potassium chloride), which can cause electrons to be knocked off chloride ions and trapped by sodium ions, eventually leading to the formation of these sodium clusters.
