1.9" Spessartine Garnet Cluster on Feldspar - China

Here is a beautiful 1.9" specimen that contains an aggregation of spessartine garnets that formed over a feldspar matrix, collected from Fujiang, China.

Feldspars are a group of rock-forming tectosilicate minerals. It is also one of the most common minerals on earth, making up nearly 60% of the crust.

Garnets are nesosilicates having the general formula X3Y2(Si O4)3. There are many species of garnet which are pyrope, almandine, spessartine, uvarovite, andradite and grossular (varieties of which are hessonite or cinnamon-stone and tsavorite).

Garnet species are found in many colors including red, orange, yellow, green, purple, brown, blue, black, pink, and colorless, with reddish shades most common.

Spessartine, often mistakenly referred to as spessartite, is a nesosilicate, manganese aluminium garnet species, Mn2+3Al2(SiO4)3. The name is a derivative of Spessart in Bavaria, Germany, the type locality of the mineral.
