3.6" Rhodochrosite Stalactite Slice with Galena Inclusions - Argentina

This is a polished rhodochrosite stalactite slice containing galena, collected from the Santa Rita Mine in Argentina. The portion of this mine that produced these types of banded rhodochrosite specimens, was mined out decades ago. The banding of this specimen is beautifully defined and contains wonderful coloring.

This specimen comes with an acrylic display stand.

Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate mineral with them chemical composition MnCO3. The crystals typically have a pink-red coloration and cleaves with rhombohedral cleaving in three directions. It forms from hydrothermal pockets and can be found as both crystals and in banded formations.

Galena is a lead based mineral that is in fact the primary ore of lead, and has been used for its lead content for thousands of years. Galena typically displays a gray metallic luster and forms cubes or octahedral crystals. The chemical composition of galena is PbS.
