About Hemimorphite Crystals

Hemimorphite is a hydrated zinc silicate mineral best known for its distinctly hemimorphic crystals—meaning the two ends of a single crystal grow in different shapes, a rare trait that inspired its name. It commonly forms in botryoidal (grape-like) crusts, radiating clusters, and bladed crystal sprays, giving collectors a wide range of natural sculptural forms. Its most recognized colors are blue, blue-green, and green, caused by trace copper, though it can also appear white, colorless, gray, yellow, or brown depending on impurities. Its silky to glassy luster and micro-crystalline surface textures make fine specimens especially eye-catching in display cases.

This mineral forms in the oxidized zones of zinc ore deposits, often alongside smithsonite, willemite, and other secondary zinc minerals. Notable sources include China (Guangxi, Yunnan), the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mexico, Namibia, Morocco, and the United States, particularly historic localities in New Mexico and Colorado. While blue botryoidal material is the most iconic, sharp terminated crystal clusters from China are highly sought after for their symmetry and aesthetics. Because of its rarity in well-formed crystals and vibrant tones, hemimorphite remains a favorite among both beginner and advanced mineral collectors.
