What Is Seraphinite?

When all is said and done, seraphinite is the darkest green, chatoyant form of the mineral clinochlore. Clinochlores are magnesium and aluminum-rich silicate minerals that are most often green in color and have perfect cleavage. Seraphinite itself ranges from dark-green to grey in color, with feathering effects added through reflective highlights. The chatoyancy is enhanced by the tabular crystal form that seraphinite takes. Its attractive color and patterning make it an exceptional gemstone, and it is highly valued by collectors.

Where Is Seraphinite Found?

The only known deposit of seraphinite is the Korshunovskoye iron skarn deposit in the Irkutskaya Oblast of Eastern Siberia. The mineral is exclusively extracted from a singular location, so seraphinite is quite rare. Roughly 70 other minerals have been found in this mine, mainly those high in iron, magnesium, and aluminum in addition to silicates.

How Does Seraphinite Form?

Seraphinite, like other clinochlores, forms as an alteration mineral in metamorphic environments. It can also form in hydrothermal replacement deposits as a secondary mineral. Tabular seraphinite crystals are often found encasing the primary mineral.
