1" Fossil Egg Case (Lepidocystis) - Illinois

This is a 1.0" fossil egg case of an epifaunal suspension feeder (Lingula) from the Carbondale Formation near Essex. Illinois. It is preserved in an ironstone nodule and contains both the positive (convex) and the negative (concave) halves of the fossil.

Epifaunal organisms are marine organisms like starfish or anemeone that live on a substrate but do not burrow into it.
