1.29" Cretaceous Fossil Turtle (Toxochelys) Leg Bone - Kansas
This is a 1.29" late Cretaceous aged fossil skull bone of a marine turtle (Toxochelys sp.). It was found in the Smoky Hill Chalk of the Niobrara Formation in Kansas, a very fossiliferous marine formation. This is a partial femur, comprising the distal head, where it would connect to the tibia and fibula bones of the lower leg in a living animal. It is about 30% of the complete bone, and is worn lightly on the head and breakpoint.
About Toxochelys
Toxochelys was a genus of marine turtle that lived in the Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic era. Toxochelys fossils are found in areas mainly corresponding with the Western Interior Seaway of the Cretaceous period. It lived alongside large mosasaurs and other marine turtles. The lineage of turtles Toxochelys belongs to is now extinct, but it is thought that they were a transitional stage between terrestrial ancestors and modern sea turtles.
