1.5" Miocene Fossil Nutmeg Snail (Trigonostoma) Shell - France
This is a beautifully preserved, 1.5" long fossil gastropod (sea snail) shell of the genus/species Trigonostoma trochleare, collected near Bordeaux, France. It came out of a Miocene-aged marine deposit and has been prepped free of the sandstone matrix it was found in. Trigonostoma trochleare is an extinct species of fossil sea snail belonging to the family Cancellariidae (nutmeg snails).
Gastropods, or snails, have been around since the Late Cambrian period. The class Gastropoda contains a vast total of named species, second only to the insects in overall number. There are 611 known families of gastropods, of which 202 families are extinct and appear only in the fossil record.
