1.55" Lichid Trilobite (Akantharges) - Very Large For Species

This is a beautiful, 1.55" long specimen of an unusual lichid (Akantharges mbareki) trilobite collected near Tinejdad, Morocco. These Akantharges are slightly different from the much more available Basseiarges trilobites mainly coming from Jorf. They have become few and far between on the market because the site is no longer collectable.

This is the largest example I've seen of the species. The preparation is excellent. There is some shell restoration around the front edge of its head.

Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.
