About Chalcedony Replaced Gastropods From India

These striking fossil gastropods (marine snails) from India are beautifully preserved examples of Cretaceous-aged shells that have been completely replaced by chalcedony. Over tens of millions of years, silica-rich fluids permeated the original shell material, gradually replacing it with microcrystalline quartz while preserving the spiral architecture, whorls, and fine surface details of the ancient mollusk. The result is a fossil that blends paleontology and aesthetics—ancient marine life captured in shimmering chalcedony that may display soft translucence, subtle banding, or warm earth-tone coloration depending on the locality. Found primarily in the Cretaceous formations of Gujarat and Western India, these specimens offer a unique window into an ancient shallow-sea ecosystem while also serving as naturally sculpted mineral artworks.
