11" Very Large, Cut & Polished Ammonite Fossil - Madagasar
This is a 11" wide cut and polished ammonite (Cleoniceras) fossil from Madagascar. It exhibits gorgeous mineralization within the chambers, each separated by white calcite septa (divisions). Some of the chambers are still hollow and lined with orange quartz crystals. Getting fossils of Cleoniceras this large is quite unusual. The very center of the ammonite has been repaired.
Comes with a pair of display stands.

Ammonites were predatory cephalopod mollusks that resembled squids with spiral shells. They are more closely related to living octopuses, though their shells resemble that of nautilus species. True ammonites appeared in the fossil record about 240 million years ago during the Triassic Period. The last lineages disappeared 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous.
