16.1" Impressive Fossil Crocodylomorph (Gavialoid?) Jaw - Morocco
This is a stunning, 16.1" long crocodylomorph (gavialoid?) mandible (lower jaw) from the Middle Eocene - Bartonian Stage Aridal Formation in Western Sahara, Morocco. It's largely intact with 19 complete, partial, and unerupted teeth present.
The Aridal Formation hosts diverse Eocene marine life, including crocodylomorphs, with some fragmentary jawbones showing features consistent with longirostrine (long-snouted) dyrosaurids, though they're often classified as indeterminate crocodyliformes or gavialoids due to lack of diagnostic material.
There are multiple repaired and glue stabilized cracks through this jaw, some areas of which required gap fill restoration. Each "half" of the mandible was found slightly disarticulated, requiring them to be glued back together with some gap fill. We suspect many of these teeth are composites from another crocodylomorph or were found associated and glued back into place.
