2.2" Agatized Gastropod (Cerithium?) Fossil - Morocco

This is a gorgeous fossil gastropod most likely of the genus Cerithium, collected from an Eocene aged (34-56 million years old) deposit in Morocco. These gastropods have been replaced by a yellowish-orange agate.

This specimen is HUGE at 2.2" long. We've seen hundreds of gastropods from this locality and they average less than an inch long. Under shortwave ultraviolet light, this gastropod even exhibits a white fluorescence.

Gastropods, or snails, have been around since the Late Cambrian period. The class Gastropoda contains a vast total of named species, second only to the insects in overall number. There are 611 known families of gastropods, of which 202 families are extinct and appear only in the fossil record.
