2.3" Fossil Dinosaur (Tenontosaurus) Vertebra Bone Section - Montana

This is a 2.3" long iguonodontian dinosaur (Tenontosaurus tilletti) vertebra bone section from the Early Jurassic-aged Cloverly Formation in Montana.

About Tenontosaurus

Tenontosaurus is a genus of iguanodontian ornithopod dinosaur. It had an unusually long, broad tail, which like its back was stiffened with a network of bony tendons. Its long forelimbs and short, broad hands suggest that it walked on all fours, although it was probably able to rear on its back legs when feeding or fighting. Tenontosaurus is best known for having been discovered alongside remains of the theropod, Deinonychus, indicated there was a prey/predator relationship between the two species.

About The Cloverly Formation

The Cloverly Formation is an Early Cretaceous sedimentary unit exposed across parts of Wyoming, Montana, and neighboring areas of the western United States. Deposited roughly 115–108 million years ago, its rocks record a mixture of river channels, floodplains, and other terrestrial environments that supported a diverse ecosystem of dinosaurs, reptiles, and other vertebrates. The formation is particularly important because it preserves dinosaur communities from a period of major faunal transition in North America, between the better-known Late Jurassic Morrison Formation and the dinosaur assemblages of the Late Cretaceous.

Among the best-known dinosaurs from the Cloverly Formation is the large predatory theropod Acrocanthosaurus, represented by teeth and skeletal material. Herbivorous dinosaurs include the heavily armored nodosaur Sauropelta edwardsorum, the iguanodontian ornithopod Tenontosaurus tilletti, and sauropods such as Sauroposeidon. Smaller theropods, including deinonychosaurs, are also represented, most notably Deinonychus antirrhopus. The discovery of Deinonychus material associated with Tenontosaurus remains one of the formation's most famous paleontological occurrences and played an important role in changing scientific perceptions of dinosaurs as active, dynamic animals.
