2.4" Miocene Fossil Sea Snail (Euthriofusus) Shell - France
This is a beautifully preserved, 2.4" long fossil gastropod (sea snail) shell of the genus/species Euthriofusus burdigalensis, collected near Bordeaux, France. It came out of an Early Miocene-aged (Burdigalian) marine deposit and has been prepped free of the sandstone matrix it was found in.
Gastropods, or snails, have been around since the Late Cambrian period. The class Gastropoda contains a vast total of named species, second only to the insects in overall number. There are 611 known families of gastropods, of which 202 families are extinct and appear only in the fossil record.
