2.4" Silurian Dolostone w/ Sparkling Fossil Coral (Fletcheria) - Ohio
This is an interesting 2.4" wide section of dolostone containing fossil rugose coral of the species Fletcheria guelphensis. It has been left in its rough state to reveal the sparkling interior of the coral's "skeleton". The dolostone was collected from a Middle Silurian-aged deposit within the Greenfield Formation in Clay Center, Ohio.
Horn coral, or Rugose coral, first appeared in the geological record 488 million years ago and went extinct during the great Permian extinction 251 million years ago. They get their name from the hornlike structures built by the coral animal. They are very often used as an index fossil to help correlate the geological ages of different formations.
