2.85" Fossil Tapir (Colodon) Jaw Section - South Dakota

This is a 2.85" wide jaw section of Colodon sp., a tapir-like mammal, collected from the Brule Formation in the White River Badlands of South Dakota. It's Oligocene in age, or approximately 30 - 34 million years old.

There are four teeth within this section of mandible.

Tapirs are a distant relative of horses and rhinos found in South America and Indonesia. They feature trunk-like noses and have bodies very similar to that of a pig's. They average about 6 feet long and weigh up to 700 pounds. Their general appearance has changed little in the last several million years.
