20.3" Fossil Sauropod (Apatosaurus) Vertebra - Bone Cabin Quarry

This is a 20.3" tall proximal caudal vertebra of the sauropod dinosaur Apatosaurus, collected from the famous Bone Cabin Quarry in Wyoming. It has undergone significant compression and warping as a result of geologic forces over millions of years, though amazingly the majority of the centrum and vertebral arch was recovered.

It is accompanied by a metal display stand.

The centrum of this vertebra has several crack repairs, many of which required gap fill restoration. This gap fill restoration is primarily along the anterior face and makes up approximately 20% of the centrum. The same can be said for the vertebral arch, with notable fragmentation throughout the spinous process. The right prezygapophysis has been entirely restored.

Apatosaurus is a genus of large sauropod dinosaurs in the diplodocid family. They could have reached lengths of 80-90 feet and lived approximately 150 million years ago, between the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. Fossils have almost entirely been recovered from the Morrison Formation of Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Utah. The cervical vertebrae of Apatosaurus are less elongated and more heavily constructed than those of Diplodocus, another diplodocid found in the same formation. Leg bones are also much stockier despite their longer length, implying that Apatosaurus was a more robust animal than Diplodocus.

The Bone Cabin Quarry has historical significance because it was discovered in 1897 and excavated by the American Museum of Natural History from 1898 through 1905. It lies near the famous Como Bluff and got its name from a nearby sheepherder's cabin built entirely out of fossil dinosaur bones. This quarry now lies on private land, where it continues to be excavated.
