Cretaceous Heteromorph Ammonite Fossil - France #251715

This is a 3.1" fossil heteromorph ammonite collected from Drôme, France. It is Hauterivian (Cretaceous period) in age, or approximately 132 million years old. The rock has been worked away to expose this ammonite. While it resembles the genus Ancyloceras, it comes from a deposit that's slightly older than its first documented appearance.

Comes with an acrylic display stand to assist with presentation.

Ammonites were predatory cephalopod mollusks that resembled squids with spiral shells. They are more closely related to living octopuses, though their shells resemble that of nautilus species. True ammonites appeared in the fossil record about 240 million years ago during the Triassic Period. The last lineages disappeared 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous.
