3.1" Fossil Ammonite (Acanthopleuroceras) - France

This is a 3.1" fossil ammonite (Acanthopleuroceras) from near Fresnay-les-Puceux, France. It is in good condition shown nice detail of the outer shell. This specimen is uniquely prepared in that it can be removed from the stone in which it was found. This allows for viewing all sides and the negative impression left in the rock.

Comes with an acrylic stand.

Ammonites were predatory cephalopod mollusks that resembled squids with spiral shells. They are more closely related to living octopuses, though their shells resemble that of nautilus species. True ammonites appeared in the fossil record about 240 million years ago during the Triassic Period. The last lineages disappeared 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous.
