This is a beautifully preserved, 3.25" long fossil gastropod (sea snail) shell of the genus/species Turritella terebralis, collected near Bordeaux, France. It came out of an Early Miocene-aged marine deposit, making it approximately 20 to 23 million years old. It has been prepped free of the sandstone matrix it was found in.

Gastropods, or snails, have been around since the Late Cambrian period. The class Gastropoda contains a vast total of named species, second only to the insects in overall number. There are 611 known families of gastropods, of which 202 families are extinct and appear only in the fossil record.
