3.3" Plate of Silurian Fossil Algae (Kalania) Fossils - Estonia

This is a plate of Lower Silurian-aged algae fossils of the species Kalania pusilla, collected from Kalana Quarry in Estonia. This location provided an exceptional preservation atmosphere for these plants which typically do not fossilize well.

Comes with an acrylic display stand.

Kalania pusilla is an exceptionally preserved, non-calcified dasycladalean alga that's found in the Lower Silurian-aged Kalana Lagerstätte of Estonia. Described in 2015 by paleontologists O. Tinn, V. Mastik, L. Ainsaar, and T. Meidla, it is famous for containing the oldest documented gametophores (reproductive structures) in its plant group. Because typical fossil algae rely on hard, calcified structures to leave records, Kalania pusilla is a rare find. It survived as a non-calcified alga due to unique environmental conditions at the Lagerstätte, which allowed for the preservation of its fine, delicate internal anatomy and reproductive organs.
