3.6" Fossil Baby Oreodont (Merycoidodon?) Partial Skeleton - Wyoming
This is a rare, partial oreodont (Merycoidodon sp.?) skeleton in situ, collected from the White River Badlands Group of Wyoming. This formation is Oligocene in age, making this fossil approximately 32 million years old! In addition to the partial skull with teeth, naturally associated vertebrae, a scapula, and ribs have also been exposed from the rock. One edge of the rock has been cut flat so that it stands up nicely without the need for a display stand.
An incomplete skull makes it nearly impossible to provide an accurate genus/species considering there are several oreodont species in this deposit. All of the bones are free of repair/restoration.

Oreodonts are an extinct mammal most closely related to camels and pigs. They have no close relatives living today. They were herbivorous, with short faces and fang-like canine teeth. About the size of a sheep, they roamed the plains of North America in huge numbers during the Oligocene period.
