3.7" Rare, Carboniferous Goniatite (Imitoceras) Fossil - Indiana

This is 3.7" wide Placenticeras costatum ammonite fossil that was collected from the Rockford Limestone of Rockford, Indiana. The rock has been almost completley removed from this goniatite specimen. There is some breakage on one side of the goniatite. It comes with an acrylic display stand.

This is a unique piece out of an old collection that we recently acquired, so it's the only one like it that we have available.

Goniatites possessed a shell divided internally into chambers filled with gas for buoyancy. An open chamber at the front of the shell provided living space for the animal. The general morphology and habit of goniatites was probably similar to that of their later relatives the ammonites: they swam freely and possessed heads with two well developed eyes and arms.
