This is a high quality, table top sized round of Jurassic aged petrified wood from the Junggar Basin, China. The slice was taken from the center of a large, perfect log and is ready to be used as a small table top, wall piece or other type of display. It's 31.5 x 24 inches and is just over 1 inch thick. Comes with the pictured adjustable metal stand.
Both sides have been polished to a mirror finish with no dull spots or scuff marks. The photos show off the natural reddish-brown to purple coloration of this spectacular piece. This is truly a natural work of art.
Please note the rough petrified wood was legally exported from China several years before the broad fossil export restrictions went into effect in 2011.
Petrified wood is the name given to wood that has been turned into stone (fossilized) through the process of permineralization. In this process, all of the organic matter becomes replaced by minerals, while much of the original structure, such as tree rings, is retained. For this to happen, the wood needs to be buried in an environment low in oxygen to prevent decomposition and with flowing, mineral-laden water, so minerals may replace structures. The coloration is caused by various minerals that present in that water during fossilization. For example, red colors are due to iron compounds, greens due to copper, and so on.
