4.2" Fossil Whale Thoracic Vertebra - South Carolina
This is a fossil whale vertebra (posterior thoracic) collected from a river in South Carolina. It eroded out of the Hawthorn Formation and therefore would be approximately 2.5 to 5 million years old. The two likely candidates for genus of this vertebra are the pygmy sperm whale Kogiopsis, or the sperm whale Scaldicetus.
