4.5" Polished, Agatized/Pyritized Ammonite (Cleoniceras) - Madagascar
This is a 4.5" wide polished ammonite from Madagagascar of the species Cleoniceras. It is absolutely gorgeous, displaying the distinctive suture pattern of the Cleoniceras genus. This 110 million year old ammonite is truly a natural work of art and is very displayable on the included acrylic stand. Portions of the ammonite preserved through pyritization which stands out with its metallic luster and dull gold coloration.
Ammonites were predatory mollusks that resembled a squid with a shell. These cephalopods had eyes, tentacles, and spiral shells. They are more closely related to a living octopus, though the shells resemble that of a nautilus. Ammonites appeared in the fossil record about 240 million years ago and they barely survived several major extinction events. The last lineages disappeared 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous.
