About Mammites Ammonites

Mammites is a genus of extinct ammonites that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 95 to 90 million years ago, within the Cenomanian to Turonian stages. Specimens from Morocco are especially well-known and come from the rich marine deposits of the Goulmima and Aoulouz regions, where they occur alongside other classic Cretaceous ammonites and marine fossils.

These ammonites are characterized by their moderately involute shells with thick, ribbed whorls and strong tubercles (knobby projections) along the ventrolateral margins. The ornamentation often gives Mammites a distinctive, rugged appearance compared to smoother genera. Sutures are complex and deeply lobed, typical of the family Acanthoceratidae, to which this genus belongs. The shell’s coiling is usually compact, with an oval to subquadrate whorl section and a somewhat flattened venter.

Ammonites were ancient marine cephalopods related to modern squids and octopuses, distinguished by their tightly coiled spiral shells. These shells provided protection and buoyancy, enabling them to move easily through prehistoric seas. First appearing about 240 million years ago, ammonites thrived for over 175 million years as active predators feeding on smaller marine life. Their long dominance ended 65 million years ago during the mass extinction that also wiped out the dinosaurs.
