Ankylosaur Vertebra & Scute With Metal Stand - Montana

This is a vertebra and scute of an Ankylosaur, from the Hell Creek Formation, Montana. Not enough diagnostic material has been uncovered and studied from this formation for identification down to the species level. The vertebra is well preserved with areas of repair, crack fill and restoration. The end of one transverse process has been completely restored. The scute is in good condition with the restoration to the distal end.

Ankylosaurs were herbivorous dinosaurs that lived during the Cretaceous and evolved complete body armor covered in plates, scutes and spikes. They wielded a massive tail club which could have been used to defensive purposes against predators such as Tyrannosaurs. Adult Ankylosaurs are believed to have reached up to 25 feet in length.
