This exceptional fossil display features a palm frond, Sabalites, centered on a substantial 57" × 40.75" slab of rock. Surrounding the frond are several march flies of the species Plecia pealei, with a 5.3" Knightia fish positioned to its right. Unlike many fossil murals that incorporate inlaid fish, all fossils on this plate are naturally associated, with no compositing. This unusual combination beautifully showcases both flora and fauna from the Green River Formation.

The rock has been backed with moisture-resistant wood for added stability and includes a wooden wall hanger, allowing it to be hung upon arrival. Its impressive scale and thoughtfully prepared mounting create a museum-quality presentation.

Measurements:

Plate - 57 x 40.75"
Palm - 40.2" long, 33" wide
Knightia - 5.3" long
Weight - 146 lbs

There are multiple repaired cuts along the bottom left corner, a couple of which run through the stem of the palm. There is an additional repaired crack starting at the bottom left of the plate and continuing up at a 45 degree angle through the fish. These repairs required some minor gap fill and surface restoration.

About Fossil Lake

50 million years ago, in the Eocene epoch, these fish thrived in Fossil Lake, which was fed by the Uinta and Rocky Mountain highlands. The anoxic conditions at the bottom of Fossil Lake slowed bacterial decomposition, prevented scavengers from disturbing corpses, and, most interestingly, suffocated creatures that ventured into the oxygen-starved aquatic layer. The result is a miraculous exhibition of Eocene biota: a subtropical aquatic community within sycamore forests, teeming with creatures such as freshwater stingrays, dog-sized horses, menacing alligators, early flying bats, and one of the first primates.
