6.1" Fossil Whale Lumbar Vertebra w/ Shark Predation - South Carolina
This is a fossil whale vertebra (posterior lumbar or anterior caudal) collected from a river in South Carolina. It eroded out of the Hawthorn Formation and therefore would be approximately 2.6.1 to 5 million years old. The two likely candidates for genus of this vertebra are the pygmy sperm whale Kogiopsis, or the sperm whale Scaldicetus.
There is notable predation (bite marks) from serrated shark teeth all over this vertebra, indication something (or several things) were munching on this whale's carcass.
Comes with an acrylic display stand.
