This is a large fossil whelk of the species Busycon contrarium that was collected from the Pliocene age Caloosahatchee Formation of Sarasota County, Florida. It is 6.65" long and approximately 2.5 - 5 million years old.

Welk's were predatory sea snails that fed mainly on bivalves.
