6.8" Pennsylvanian Fern (Neuropteris?) Fossil - Kentucky
This is a 6.8" wide fossil flora plate, collected from the Breathitt Formation of Leslie County, Kentucky. It includes numerous impressions of Neuropteris sp.(?) leaflets on branches, showing just how these tree ferns' canopies would have looked during the Carboniferous.

Neuropteris is an extinct genus of fern that reproduced from seed as opposed to sporophyte reproduction like most modern ferns. As with most seed ferns, Neurodontopteridaceae grew in tree form.
