This is a Jurassic aged Hemicidaris crenularis fossil urchin from the Ardennes region of France. This urchin is still preserved within the rock it was found in. Hemicidaris is an extinct genus of echinoid that lived from the Middle Jurassic to the Early Cretaceous. Its remains have been found in Africa, Asia, and Europe.

Sea urchins are a type of echinoderm that are still living relatively unchanged today. They live at the bottom of soft ocean floors and have long spines protruding from their central bodies. They move along the bottom of the ocean using many small feet while feeding on various plant and animal matter.
