6" Triassic Coelacanth (Whiteia woodwardi) - Madagascar

This is a nicely preserved, Lower Triassic (247 million year old) Coelacanth fossil from the Karoo Formation of Madagascar. It's preserved inside of a concretion that has been broken open (only one half is included) and is 6" in length. There are many different types of fossil fish found in these nodules, but the Coelacanths are one of the rarer components of the fauna. Incredible detail including fins, scales and the bony head structure. One repaired crack across the tail.
